ReEnerge acknowledges the Nukunu people, Traditional Owners of the land on which the Hughes Gap Energy Project will harvest and store the energy of the wind and sun. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.
The Hughes Gap Energy Project is a renewable energy project proposed by ReEnerge Australia Holdings, that is located in South Australia’s Mid North region near the town of Crystal Brook. The project is in early stages of development and will be delivered in phases. The first phase of the project is a 300MW (4 hours) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Subsequent phases, including a wind farm, are currently being investigated.
ReEnerge Australia Holdings is an independent power producer and is the developer of the Hughes Gap Energy Project. It was established in 2024 in Australia by a Singapore power company ReEnerge Pte Ltd. The founders and members of the ReEnerge have developed, constructed and operated, renewable and conventional power projects across Australia, Asia and Middle East.
The Hughes Gap Energy Project is located on land north of Crystal Brook including the area located along the Wilkins Highway
Renewable energy projects play a vital role in strengthening South Australia's electricity grid and supporting the national energy transition. As demand for reliable, low-emission power continues to grow, renewable energy projects are essential to achieving Net Zero targets and ensuring a resilient, future-ready energy network.
Further information can be found on the Government of South Australia’s Community Guide to Renewable Energyavailable here.
ReEnerge is committed to sharing the benefits and rewards of Hughes Gap Energy with communities within the Crystal Brook Region. The project will provide a variety of benefits to the community which may include neighbourhood benefit programs, creation of grant funds and regional economic development including local jobs and contracting.
ReEnerge is committed to developing a Hughes Gap Community Benefit Program which will include sustained, ongoing investment in community programs, clubs and local infrastructure. The details of this program including its implementation will be developed in close collaboration with Council, the local and surrounding communities and key local organisations.
A BESS is like a big rechargeable battery for the electricity grid. It stores energy, often from renewable sources like solar and wind, and releases it when it is needed, helping to keep power supply reliable day and night. Just like a home solar battery, the BESS stores energy when there is a lot of renewable power or when prices are low and sends energy back to the grid when demand is high or prices go up. Batteries also help keep the grid stable by quickly adjusting to changes in electricity supply and demand, making sure the lights stay on across South Australia.
South Australia is leading the way in renewable energy, with major investments taking place across the state, particularly in the Mid North, which is becoming a hub for clean energy innovation.
Hughes Gap is an excellent location for renewable energy because it has strong, consistent winds throughout the year and is close to existing infrastructure like the existing ElectraNet transmission line and substation. These features make it easier to connect to the grid and deliver clean energy efficiently. That is why the area has attracted interest from renewable energy developers in the past
As part of developing the Hughes Gap Energy Project, ReEnerge is undertaking detailed investigations to understand any potential impacts and how to manage them. These include, but are not limited to, assessments of local ecology, traffic, fire risk, noise, visual impact and heritage. The investigations allow the project to either avoid, reduce, or carefully manage any impacts, to ensure the project is respectful of the local environment and community.
Results of these investigations will be available to the community through a targeted consultation process, consistent with state legislation under the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act (2023). Notification of this public consultation will be made available through a variety of channels including the Port Pirie Recorder, social media and email notices.
The Hughes Gap Energy Project is currently in the early project development stages, and a more defined schedule will be available in the coming months.
Immediate priorities for the project team is undertaking engagement with key local stakeholders. This includes gaining a greater understanding of the communities priorities to inform the development of a Community Benefits Program.
ReEnerge welcomes feedback from community members and stakeholders to help shape the Hughes Gap Energy Project. Your insights are important to ensure the project reflects local values and priorities.
We are committed to being transparent, inclusive, and responsive, listening to concerns, answering questions, and incorporating feedback wherever possible. Together, we can build a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for South Australia.
